In a shocking turn of events, San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle during an early morning incident in San Francisco. This distressing news has raised concerns among fans and the community alike. According to police reports, the shooting occurred around 4:06 a.m. on the 17th block of Mission Street. Law enforcement spokesperson Evan Sernoffsky mentioned that there was a confrontation involving two groups inside a business at an event, although it appears that White was not directly involved in the altercation.
After the incident, he was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. On the same day, he underwent surgery on his ankle and is reportedly expected to recover well. "Our officers are diligently working on this investigation and we are pursuing several leads," Sernoffsky noted, highlighting the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating this case.
Later in the day, the 49ers organization released a statement confirming the incident. They stated, "Keion White was the victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco. He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital, and we will keep everyone informed with any updates as they become available."
Sernoffsky clarified that there were no other reported victims and as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. He also expressed uncertainty about whether this incident was related to the recent Super Bowl, which had taken place just hours earlier in Santa Clara, featuring White's former team, the New England Patriots. It's noteworthy that White, who is 27 years old, was traded to the 49ers on October 29.
Interestingly, photographs posted on White’s Instagram showcased him enjoying the Super Bowl weekend, where he was seen in the stands wearing a Patriots hat while cheering for the game between the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.
This incident marks the second time in a year and a half that a player from the 49ers has been involved in a shooting. Receiver Ricky Pearsall faced a similar fate when he was shot through the chest during a robbery attempt at the intersection of Geary Street and Grant Avenue on August 31, 2024. In that instance, a 17-year-old suspect attempting to steal Pearsall's Rolex watch was also shot in the arm and subsequently arrested. Fortunately, Pearsall made a complete recovery as the bullet passed through his torso without damaging any vital organs.
Keion White was drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft and has played in nine games for the 49ers this season, starting two of them. He has recorded 1.5 sacks and six quarterback hits, showcasing his potential as a key player.
