Health Canada Issues Nationwide Recall for Soaps Due to Chemical Hazard
Health Canada has issued a nationwide recall for soaps produced by an Ontario-based company, Lake on the Woods Sunrise Soap Co., due to a chemical hazard. The recall affects approximately 400 units of the company's "Shades of Grey" bar soap, which was sold in Canada between January 2019 and January 2026. The issue stems from a high concentration of methyl eugenol, a chemical that is prohibited as a pure ingredient due to its potential carcinogenicity. However, it is permitted as a naturally occurring component in botanical extracts with specific limits depending on the product type.
The affected products, manufactured in Kenora, Ontario, include 16 g, 67 g, and 135 g bars of soap. Despite the potential hazard, no incidents or injuries have been reported as of January 7. Health Canada advises consumers to immediately stop using the recalled products, dispose of them, and contact the company for a replacement. Consumers can reach Lake of the Woods Sunrise Soap Co. via email at lakeofthewoodssoap@gmail.com for further information.
Additionally, Health Canada encourages consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form. This proactive approach ensures that potential hazards are identified and addressed promptly, prioritizing consumer safety and well-being.
