Southern NSW residents are urged to take precautions against mosquito bites following a recent development that could impact their health. A probable case of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has been identified in a man in his 60s, and the virus has also been detected in sentinel chickens in the Upper Lachlan Shire near Goulburn. This is a serious concern as JE is a rare but potentially severe illness caused by infected mosquitoes, leading to neurological symptoms like headaches, confusion, convulsions, and reduced consciousness.
The man in question was likely exposed to the JE virus in the Riverina region in late December. This discovery highlights the presence of the virus in the area, with the Upper Lachlan Shire detection indicating its potential circulation. NSW Health employs sentinel chicken surveillance to provide early warnings, emphasizing the need for residents to take action.
Director Alison Nikitas advises that anyone living or working in high-risk areas should take preventive measures. This includes avoiding mosquito bites and getting vaccinated, as there is no specific treatment for JE. The vaccine is safe and effective, and it is free for those in inland regions and certain high-risk occupations. It is available through general practitioners, Aboriginal health services, and pharmacists.
To protect themselves, individuals should apply repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin, reapplying regularly, especially after swimming. Wearing light, long-sleeved clothing, and using insecticide sprays, vaporizers, and mosquito coils can also help. Additionally, ensuring windows and doors are screened and removing potential mosquito breeding sites, such as old tires and empty pots, is crucial.
For infants under three months, using an infant carrier with mosquito netting is recommended. When camping, setting up a tent with fly screens or sleeping under a mosquito net can provide protection. It's important to note that JE cannot be transmitted directly between humans or animals, and the vaccine is a vital tool in preventing this rare but serious illness.
