In a tragic development, Bangladesh has reported its very first death from the Nipah virus (NiV) in 2026. This alarming case involves a woman who lost her life due to complications from this severe brain-affecting virus after ingesting raw date juice. The incident took place in the northern region of Naogaon, as confirmed by Sharmin Sultana, a senior scientific officer at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, on February 7.
The victim, a woman in her forties, began exhibiting symptoms typical of a Nipah infection on January 21. These included a high fever, persistent headaches, muscle cramps, significant loss of appetite, overwhelming fatigue, and bouts of vomiting. As the illness progressed, she also experienced excessive salivation, confusion, and seizures, as outlined by the World Health Organization.
By January 27, the woman had fallen into unconsciousness, prompting a local doctor to transfer her to a specialized hospital for advanced care.
It's worth noting that Bangladesh first identified cases of Nipah virus infection as far back as 2001. Since then, the country has seen human cases emerge nearly every year. For instance, just last year in 2025, there were four confirmed fatalities linked to the virus.
