Cornwall's School Zone Speed Traps: A Warning for Drivers
In a recent development, two drivers have been caught speeding in a 30mph zone near a primary school in Cornwall, highlighting a critical issue of road safety. The incident occurred during routine speed checks conducted by Devon and Cornwall Police on A3058 William Hoskin Road, outside Nansledan Primary School, on Monday morning.
The police received concerns from residents and parents about speeding in the area, prompting the checks. The officers arrived at around 07:00 GMT when it was 'snowing lightly' and left at 09:45, with conditions described as 'icy'.
Insp. Dave Routley from the force's road safety team emphasized the dangers of speeding, stating, 'At these speeds, a driver would have little time to react to a child running out in front of their car.' This statement underscores the potential tragedy that could occur if drivers exceed the speed limit, especially in poor weather conditions.
Despite the overall 'very good' speed compliance around the school, the presence of two drivers caught driving at excess speed was 'disappointing'. Routley further emphasized that driving too fast for the conditions or exceeding the speed limit is a leading cause of fatal and serious collisions, with approximately four people dying on Britain's roads daily.
Human error, he noted, is responsible for around 98% of collisions. The stopping distance in icy conditions would be significantly increased, making it even more crucial for drivers to adjust their speeds to suit the road and weather conditions, especially with further snow and ice forecast.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for drivers to adhere to speed limits, particularly around schools, and to be mindful of the potential dangers of speeding in adverse weather conditions.
