Over 14,000 new public charging stations have been installed across Great Britain, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. According to Zapmap, a leading charge point mapping service, there were a whopping 87,796 charging stations at 45,033 locations by the end of the year. But here's where it gets interesting: Zapmap distinguishes between 'charging points' and 'charging devices' or stations. While the former refers to individual connectors, the latter encompasses the entire charging station, which can include multiple charging points. This distinction is crucial for understanding the scale and impact of EV infrastructure.
The Rise of Ultra-Fast Charging
The strongest growth is in ultra-fast charging stations, with capacities of at least 150 kW. These 'ultra-rapid' charge points have seen a remarkable 41% increase, adding 2,872 stations to reach a total of 9,893. That's a significant boost in charging capacity, making long-distance EV travel more feasible and convenient.
And this is the part most people miss: Zapmap considers the number of EVSEs (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) a more useful indicator of charging ease. EVSEs, which can feature multiple charging connectors, provide a more accurate representation of the charging infrastructure's capacity.
The Evolution of Charging Categories
Zapmap categorizes charging stations based on their power output. 'Rapid' stations with 50 to 149 kW have seen an 8% increase, reaching 8,042 stations. Meanwhile, 'slow' (under 8 kW) and 'fast' (9-49 kW, typically AC chargers) categories are grouped together, with AC chargers now forming the largest category at 69,861 units, an impressive 18% increase.
Charging Hubs: The New Normal
The number of charging hubs, defined as sites with at least six 'rapid' or 'ultra-rapid' charging points, has also risen significantly. With 211 new locations, there are now 748 hubs, marking a substantial 39% increase. These hubs offer a convenient and efficient charging experience, especially for those with higher-powered EVs.
Regional Growth: A Mixed Bag
The regional distribution of high-power charger growth varies. The North West has experienced impressive year-on-year growth of over 35% in high-powered chargers, while the East of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland have recorded around 29% growth in this power band. However, it's worth noting that Northern Ireland started from a lower base.
